Ritchie Bros. in Edmonton: decades of equipment auctions

October auction at Edmonton site expected to draw thousands of buyers

1964: Lester B. Pearson was the prime minister in Canada, Ernest Manning was in his 21st year as premier of Alberta, and Ritchie Bros. was holding its first auction in Alberta. A little over 10 years later, in 1976, Ritchie Bros. was opening an auction site just outside Edmonton.

Close to 40 years later, Ritchie Bros.’ Edmonton auction site is still going strong, and we’ve added two more permanent auction sites in Alberta, in Grande Prairie and Lethbridge.

From October 27-29, 2015, Ritchie Bros. will host its 5th Edmonton auction of 2015. The auction already features more than 5,600 items from hundreds of sellers, and is expected to draw thousands of interested buyers from across the province, Canada and beyond.

Deep roots and proven results keep equipment sellers coming back

Thanks to these deep roots, almost everyone knows Ritchie Bros. in Alberta, and we know everyone. We have a seasoned sales team on the ground, with deep market knowledge that comes with decades of experience.

“This is the third time we’ve done a realignment through Ritchie Bros.,” Guy Turnbull, owner and president of A-1 Rentals, said after selling his equipment at our Edmonton auction site in April 2015. “We keep coming back because returns have been so strong.”

So how do we get great returns for sellers like Guy? Because we know how to attract the largest, most competitive bidding audience to our auctions:

  • Selection! Nowhere else can buyers find everything they need—all types of equipment, all the top brands. More cars than a car auction, more brand-name gear than a brand-name auction.
  • Comprehensive equipment info and pictures online
  • Large, well-organized yards at our bidding locations to make inspections easy (our Edmonton site is currently 120 acres)
  • In-house financing to give buyers spending power
  • Three bidding options so everyone can participate (in person, online, proxy)
  • First-class facilities so on-site buyers can be comfortable and see the equipment while they bid
  • Industry-leading online bidding (US$1.8 billion sold online in 2014)
  • No minimum bids or reserve prices—so buyers know they’re not wasting their time on auction day, because every item will be sold

After this long in the province, Ritchie Bros. is part of Edmonton and Alberta’s history—its past, present, and future. With such deep roots and decades of proven results, contractors across the province keep coming back to buy and sell their equipment.
